The Pegwells

The Pegwells are a band of folk playing the old time tunes of the Appalachian mountains. The band was formed in 2021 by Bianca Wilson (banjos) and Rebekah Bouche (guitars) as a way to claim space in a scene that marginalises non-male and non-white people. A year later they were joined by DIY/punk scene legend Ray Aggs (fiddle).

We're here to expand ingrained ideas of who this music belongs to and why; highlighting and dismantling the erasure of black contribution to traditional banjo and fiddle music.

We're on a mission to embody a fuller, more honest history, that tracks the heritage of these tunes back to West Africa as well as here to the British Isles.

Through this act of reclamation, our aim is to re-establish this music we love as a site and means of radical inclusion. Folk for the folk.
