The Hop

The Hop are an exciting new trio recently graduated from the folk degree at
Newcastle University. After meeting in the National Youth Folk Ensemble,
they developed an impulsive approach to collaborative composition which
has led to a plethora of original tunes. Their instrumental versatility allows
the band to explore a wide soundscape that maintains their traditional roots
with an innovative flair.

Not only do they play multiple instruments, including guitar, flute, recorder
and fiddle, but their infectious presence onstage is greatened by the use of
electric guitar and synthesizers that make for a compelling and complex
performance. Combined with their compositional abilities, The Hop bring a
new perspective to the folk tradition, with music that can appeal to all ages.
They have taken their sound across the North East, playing at festivals such
as Saltburn Folk Festival and Whitby Folk Week, and have performed at
notable Newcastle venues, such as The Cumberland Arms, Three Tanners
Bank, and Little Buildings.

All of this is demonstrated in their debut EP, WHAT’S HOPPENING? Releasing in November 2024, the five tracks range from ferocious fiddles and driving drumbeats, to luscious harmonies and sensitive melodies. A true
demonstration of their new and unique sound, it is just a taster of what’s to
come in their future album.
